PROPOSED CTIC ACTIVITIES 2016 - 2018

Maintain and Enhance the CTIC Website:

CTIC, in collaboration with UNESCO/IOC and the Government of Barbados, will maintain and update the newly developed CTIC website.  The website currently utilises the google translator, however CTIC will seek to enhance the website to a multilingual information platform in collaboration with UNESCO/IOC, ICG/CARIBE EWS Member States, donors and other partners, subject to availability of extra budgetary funding and technical resources.

Development, Execution and Maintenance of Preparedness, Awareness and Education Programmes:

Enhancement of Existing Tsunami Education Materials:

The enhancement of existing multi-format secondary school tsunami education materials has been identified for prioritization within the next 2-year period.  The CTIC will spearhead this process for English-speaking CARICOM ICG/CARIBE EWS Member States in partnership with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management agency (CDEMA) and the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies (SRC).  As part of the process, mechanisms for enhancing the formal integration of the materials within the school curriculum as well as piloting complemented by in-country training workshops in select Member States will also considered.  Opportunities for the adaptation of the materials for non-English speaking Member States will be pursued.

Piloting of the ICG/CARIBE EWS Tsunami Ready Programme:

CTIC will continue to pilot the ICG/CARIBE EWS Tsunami Ready Programme based on the interest of ICG/CARIBE EWS Member States and availability of funding.  Key partners will include the Caribbean Tsunami Warning Programme (CTWP), UNESCO/IOC, the United States Agency for International Development Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), the United Nations Development Programme Sub-regional Office for Barbados and the OECS (UNDP).  The programme incorporates all components of the tsunami early warning system (TEWS).

Exercises:

CTIC will continue to support the execution of the annual CARIBE WAVE Exercise and ICG/CARIBE EWS Member States in their national-level exercise and similar activities.

General Activities:

CTIC will continue to take advantage of a range of events to market and showcase the CTIC and its resources, pursue the translation and adaptation of PAE materials and the development of new resources on tsunamis and other coastal hazards through UNESCO/IOC co-support and feedback from Member States.  The distribution of virtual and hard copy public awareness and education materials to ICG MS, partners and other stakeholders will continue together with the maintenance of linkages with other TICs to ensure complementarity and information sharing.

Training and Workshops:

CTIC; in association with UNESCO/IOC, the International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC), the other global tsunami information centres and other partners will provide training and capacity-building support to Member States in order to strengthen their tsunami warning communication, hazard assessment, tsunami preparedness and response operations.

Coordination with the ICG/CARIBE EWS:

In association with the ICG/CARIBE EWS Secretariat, CTIC will support the coordination of Working Group and Task Teams to contribute to their functioning.

Enhancing CTIC’s Partnership Profile and Resource Mobilisation:

CTIC will continue to pursue the finalization of agreements with strategic ICG/CARIBE EWS Member States, partners and donors in order to secure in-kind and financial resources to facilitate its efficient operations.
